How do you like the 6550s compared to your EL37s? I have both, but am curious about your opinion.- AnyDave

I’ve seen/heard those same tubes with Tung-Sol, Leslie, RCA, GE, Magnavox and Mullard IEC labels. They are all identical construction (all made by Tung-Sol).- AnyDave

I'm obviously very biased here, so take this comment with a grain of salt, but I think they look even better in person.- AnyDave

In fairness, it's a relative scale. I'm not saying I would *never* eat a maple donut, but they are far, far down the donut chart.- AnyDave

I don't know why, but the purple cable reminds me of those magic eye stereogram photos. I've been starting at it cross-eyed for the last 15 minutes waiting for a different image to pop out.- AnyDave

I think the transformers might look even better with different bolts altogether that are the exact correct length and have a prettier head, like a torx. Which, as I type it, seems like a really strange thing to say.- AnyDave

Just keep in mind that it’s not the most accurate test rig when it comes to modeling the transfer impedance of the human ear, so the frequency responses likely won’t be correct. But it certainly can be used to check relative levels.- AnyDave

Personally, I think it's totally reasonable to start with Option 1. That way, you can get a feel for it in the stock config and figure out what direction you want to take it in. Different tube rolls will yield different results, so it's always useful to start with a baseline, particularly if...- AnyDave

I was under the impression that the EL38s were supposed to be close to the EL37s, but they definitely sound different to my ears. One isn't good and one isn't bad, they are just different tubes. As with anything, opinions will vary on which is better. I find the EL37 a bit smoother and the...- AnyDave

Speaking of Tung-Sol 6550s, I got an amazing deal on a weird pair from eBay. They are marked Mullard IEC KT88, but are clearly Tung-Sols. But, for sub $100 for the pair, I'm thrilled.- AnyDave

80'ish is a lot safer for long-term listening. If you look that NIOSH charts, if you're at 91dB, it's only recommended to listen at that level for a couple of hours. At 81 dB, you can listen all day.- AnyDave
