This was a very hard decision to make as Stax gear is a main part of my collection. Fortunately I have an alternate variation.
This is circa late 70’s and was one of two models that Stax was importing at the time. This is in near perfect condition and really look brand new. They have weathered the time amazingly. Photos don’t catch how new this looks and feels.
This is a NB (normal bias) design and so would need an amp that will work with that (6 pin plug) or an SRD6/7 energizer to then hook that up the speaker outputs of your standard amp.
Current Stax models use the higher Pro bias (5 pin plug). These sound wonderful, very balanced linear design. They do have quite a following just like the original SR-Lambda NB which sounds better than a large number of newer Pro bias Lambdas. They have a very natural, open sound.
The SR-5 is light and comfortable. Even the pads are pristine. The only blem is a small and light scratch on one metal side panel above where the model number is. I have owned them for well over 15 years, second owner.
BTW, with over a dozen Stax headphones (Earspeakers) I have never needed service. They are all in protective situations to keep them dust free and safe.
