My current setup is:
Headphones: HD6XX
Amp: La Figaro 339
Turntable: UTurn Orbit premium w/acrylic platter and Ortofon OM-5E cartridge
Preamp: Built into turntable
I recently noticed some noise in the system and I think I’ve isolated it to the built-in preamp. I first thought this was coming from the tubes in the amp, but it goes away once I turn the preamp off. I also heard many recommend a standalone preamp anyways.
In my research, I think I’ve narrowed it down to the Vincent PHO-8. Does anyone have any experience with this? How much should I consider spending if I want a noticeable improvement from the built-in unit? Generally speaking I wouldn’t imagine much, but I’ve heard many say good things about UTurn’s Pluto preamp, which is supposedly just a standalone version of what I have. I’m not sure if this is correct though.
I don’t have an extensive amount of experience with different pieces gear, which is why I resorted to making this post. Is the PHO-8 a good buy? Based on my current setup, is there something else that may be more suitable? Thanks!
