iBasso DX170 You want your Music? It is right here. *** NEW Firmware: 1.06 Apple support and other additions! ***

Good morning,

It all depends on your budget and your way of listening to music.

The DX170 for a budget of less than €450 is a very good choice for the following reasons:
- very good balanced sound which is equally suitable for Pop, Jazz, Classics, Electronic…
- much smaller than an iPhone 11 but a little thicker. It is one of the smallest DAP but is not low-end either in its manufacturing quality or its sound quality.
- Android system v. 11 relatively recent (for a DAP). There is only one DAP under Android 13 (to my knowledge) and very few Android 12. And DAPs released after the DX170 are under Android 10.
iBasso is a serious brand according to the sponsors of those who have needed after-sales service, they are responsive, efficient and very reasonable prices.
The system update is approximately between 2 and 3 years. the DX170 is released in 2022.
- For use in local playback (SD card) with wired headphones, there is no problem. the system is slow but when you are in your Player to listen to the music no worries.
- Mango Player is (for me) one of the most beautiful players and easy to use.
- The protective shell supplied with it is transparent, not as pretty as the "leather" cover but with this one, it is not necessary to remove the cover to change the SD card.
- For installing updates or music, I recommend putting the SD card in a computer (Mac or PC) it's faster...

Do not take DX 170 for the following reasons:
- If you have a budget of €900 to €1000, take the DX 260 instead, it outperforms it in all areas.
- There is also the Hiby R6 III, a little more expensive than the DX170 but more powerful. the sound is less balanced but the different system equalization systems allow you to rebalance the sound or define it to your liking. Be careful: when you can configure something in a very specific way, you can take it to the best or worst!!!
- the DX170's battery is quite small, for local listening, I recommend deactivating WiFi which in this case is useless.
- For the same reason the DX170 is unsuitable for streaming listening, moreover the little RAM means that navigation in this case is slow and music downloading takes quite a long time.

NB: the DX260 and Hiby R6 III are 2 recent DAPs (end of 2023 - beginning of 2024). Not all manufacturers have firmware updates after 2 years.
Why is the DX170 unsuitable for streaming? I wanted to use the Hiby RS2, but instead, I got the DX170 just because it could stream.

Why is Android 11 so undesirable vs Android 12 or 13?
Some apps are better with 12 or 13 but for a dap, I don't care as it isn't a phone, it is a music player. I find the wifi for streaming to be fine on the DX170. The latest firmware works fine.

Good evening,

It is always better to install firmware updates.

If I advise against using the DX170 for streaming (listening to Spotify, Deezer, Qobuz, Tydal, AppleMusic, etc.) it is because the DX170 only has 2GB of RAM and a fairly small battery. If you download Hi-Res music to listen to it then it can take a long time and prolonged use of streaming music (so with Wi-Fi enabled) will quickly reduce the battery...

Good evening,

it's quite simple:
- Download the file to your Mac or PC: - "DX170FW-ota-v1.06.zip"
it is a Zip archive which contains another archive and a text file.
- On your computer you unpack this archive. Inside there will be the file "DX170_full_ota_1.06.490.zip" and the file "readme.txt".
- you must copy the file "DX170_full_ota_1.06.490.zip" to the first level of your SD card or directly to the DX170. Do not put it in a folder.
- For from the menu where we launch the update, that is to say: - "Parameters" application then "System" menu then "UpDater", on the right there are 3 small dots, a menu this deploit "Local update". There is "internat storage" which corresponds to the internal storage of the DX170, and another line which corresponds to your SD card. If the file is copied to the first level, you will see it. You select it and the update starts…
So, I've downloaded the file to my sd card, but when I press the 3 dots i see 'local update' and nothing else. I press local update and it displays 'updating online' and nothing happens. If I hold the 3 dots down, I see 'more options', but pressing that does nothing.

Any suggestions?

Good evening,

So you have installed your SD card with the file:
“DX170_full_ota_1.06.490.zip” important, this is exactly the name you need (the zip file which is inside the downloaded file). And you passed it to the first level (root) of the SD card.
You can restart your DX170 to ensure that the SD card is correctly mounted and of course have the battery sufficiently charged (or leave it plugged into the charger).

You go to "system / updater/" and at the top right, there are the 3 small dots. press on it and “Local update” appears.
we press "local update" and 2 lines appear:
- Internal storage
- a series of numbers and letters (this is the ID of your SD card) anyway select the 2nd line. If the file is present (and viewed), it will be displayed. Select it and you can start the update.

My DX170 was delivered to me (only a few months ago) with version 1.0.4, this is the second update that I have installed this way and I have not encountered any problems.

I shave done everything you've suggested, but still get no lines after I press local update.

I'm on version 1.04.332

Just download the file, open it and there will be a folder with instructions, the change log and the actual firmware you use. Put the FW on an SD card, directly on it, and then do a local update.

That makes sense, but what is the purpose of having Wi-Fi and Bluetooth DAP player when the battery is so tiny?
If you are at a desk using wifi, have the DX170 plugged into the charger. Same for the BT. Wifi and BT take a lot of current so the battery will run down, that is normal. Bigger battery and the dap will weigh a lot more. So either go small and adapt or go big for a larger battery or use a small portable battery with the DX when needed, which is what I do.
