Wow. I always knew about the principle of electrostatic drivers, but it just never hit you'd have 580 V about an inch from your head …

"Biocellulose"? It might have smelled like blue cheese!

Click for big version.

From left to right:

AKG K-141 Monitor - 80's version. This driver is 31.3mm in diameter and clips into a 31.5mm holder. From AKG's service documentation, the later K-141 M drivers are 32mm and the exact same part number as the K-240 M.

I've got a pair of newer K-141 M phones as well, but i haven't opened them up yet.

AKG K-300 Monitor - 38mm

AKG K-301 - 38mm as well, but notice that the diaphragm is matte finish instead of shiny. Probably different materials. Visually these drivers are otherwise identical. fwiw i think the K-300 driver sounds better.

Both of these drivers are extremely fragile! All it takes is one miniature screwdriver smacking against the magnet and it's all over. If you overheat the lugs while soldering the cable, you can end up breaking the filament or even melting the diaphragm. Ask how i know.

And finally:

K-501 (Early) - this is the 1st version Varimotion driver used in the K-401 and K-501. Later versions use a gray plastic diaphragm with fewer, straighter, deeper ridges.

Edit: At this point, we are almost entirely certain that this is a K500 driver. See the discussion of K400/500/401/501 drivers here: http://www.head-fi.org/forums/f4/akg...i-have-279103/

I bought a pair of these at that auction site for $21 a couple years ago and finally got around to using them this weekend. More on that later.

I am surprised no Sennheiser HD580/600/650 Drivers yet

A couple days ago I sold my HD555 so I started using my HD580 and noticed my left channel sounded louder and better soon finding out that the right driver was lose and the plug for the cable wasn't aligned correctly. I was happy to find out because I was worried I broke them dropping them on the tile a few days earlier.

I really didn't know the driver just popped off like that It got me starting to think couldn't I make some nice portable headphones out of these drivers? like clip-ons
