Unveiled: Meet the HD 620S

Hello, I have been watching the new HD620S headphones since the first mention on the Internet and I am excited! Among other things, I have Neumann NDH30 headphones, for which I purchased a balanced cable from Hart Audio Cable terminated with a balanced 2.5mm TRRS connector to connect to the balanced output of the FiiO BTR5 DAC/AMP. Maximum satisfaction! Will this cable from the NDH30 with the same locking connector work in the HD620S?

I could see ZMF making a great leather aftermarket pad for the 620s but otherwise I’d stick to stock replacements.
Agreed. Zach's pads are awesome. The only thing i'd worry about with any aftermarket pads for the 620 is how will it change the sonics. That stock pad is actually pretty uniquely shaped, with a small perforated section inside followed by solid material, then the outer synthetic material. And the inside angle of the pads are kinda weird looking, almost like the AKG 872, with an inward sloping angle that looks very intentional. I have the ZMF 650 pads, I can see if they'll mount on the 620 when it arrives for fun. :) All in the name of science!

I'll need to check on this but I believe the twist-lock barrel is not the same as the Sennheiser style, though both 2.5mm.

With many headphones I’ve personally had pretty poor luck with pad rolling, it takes a lot of trail and error and it often ruins something about the sound even if it’s not immediately apparent. The pads are honestly why I’m holding off on the HD 620S for now, definitely plan on listening to them though.

I'm with you, its challenging. I've yet to find a better sounding pad for my HD600 and 650 than the stock pads. I wish more manufacturers would offer at least one alternative pad that is made and tuned specifically for the headphone. I love the ZMF method where they offer multiple pads and acoustic meshes to help the user fine tune the sonics to their exact liking. Yeah its a lot of work for the company, but worth it in the end IMO as you reach a broader audience. With the single pad option it's take it or leave it out of the box, unless you want to go the aftermarket off brand stuff, which is very hit and miss.

A somewhat-known fun fact: when developing a Sennheiser headphone, pad material, depth, dimensions, etc, are factored in and run through advanced simulation programs to determine what is going to "play nice" to achieve the sound we want. We can accurately determine how the coupling will affect the curve etc, before even making a prototype. Prototypes are still fun and essential :)

Yeah I have as well the stock pads are must for me on the HD 6xx line. A few companies have done the multiple pad thing where the headphones come with two different tuned pads specifically made for the headphone. First examples that come to mind to me are the DT 1770/1990 Pro and the HD 490 Pro. Would love to see more headphones do that. The only time I’ve truly had luck with pad rolling is when I extensively modified headphones and tailored the sound to the pads, etc.

Well, I'll wait until the headphones are home sometime and try a balanced cable for the NDH30. I'm still waiting to hear from ericpalonen and then I can still order a balanced cable from Aliexpress, I already have several cables from LunaShop for all my HD6** series headphones and I'm happy with them.
