ZMF Aegis Official Thread

Straight fit. Just a question of how they bias as they are low power. Worst case I think they would be fine with a 5Y3 but want to be sure.
Excellent… just working my way through the list of possibilities and seeing if I have all the adapters I need 😀

In the DIY thread, did EL11 crop up. For some reason I have it in my memory but not sure why🤪

EL11 is an EL33 with a different base, so if EL33 work out then EL11 will top (with an adapter).

I think a some Aegis owners may have been focusing on other tubes and hadn’t realised the 807 & vt60 were an option… read that as I hadn’t 🤔

I order the adapter a week a go so no doubt I’ll have a dabble with some 807s etc in the near future! There are a lot of good options out there, it’s easy to miss some of them!
To be honest, I thought 807 was only limited to those coke bottle RCA for 20 bucks a piece - kinda makes one hesitate since the adapter cost as much as the tube.

It was until my local vendor send me a picture of a drawer full of weird 807 types that I've had an adapter made and snag a pair of Fivre 807 xD.

I’ve bought the adapters with the view of using them with VT60 tubes. Other tubes will be a bonus 😀

Nice! I have 807 from Fivre, Mullard, Russian Foton, and Cossor on the way. Fun times ahead. . .

Tung-Sol 6550 and Mullard EL33 landing today :sunglasses: and a final production Aegis which I have not actually yet seen in person! Will post some pics.
Heck yeah! With all I have read about the 6550, I am excited to hear your thoughts on that one. As for the EL33 I am still waiting for my pair to arrive, and look forward to your thoughts on that one too, as well as which rectifier to pair with it.

Sounds like you’re gonna be swimming in tubes! Looking forward to your impressions

I would advise to try EL81. A very cheap tube which sounds spectacular. Adapters needed, of course. There are several variations there (3-4 types including 6DR6) which work in the same adapter and sound exceptional. Of course, do not forget that 6K6 works natively on the amplifier. Tung Sol 6K6 are something special.

6550 and a production Aegis have landed.

These tubes are pristine, this was a good buy.

Up and running on the top rack.

Oh, these 6550s are nice. Perhaps a little less airy and spacious than the EL37, but still throw a large stage. Definitely more meat on the bone, and great tone. This tube roll is a winner (other tubes are a Brimar 5R4GY and RCA 5691). Listening with Atrium Open.

Next up, the Mullard EL33.

Another nice pair, good condition. Same envelope as the EL37.

Okay so in terms of biasing, these bias really nicely in this circuit. With a GZ34, they are right near their maximum ratings, not quite there, but close. So you could technically run them with a GZ34. For longevity reasons, I would probably run them with just about anything BUT the GZ34 to get a little more voltage drop. So even GZ32 / 5V4 will be fine. If you want to treat them very nicely, GZ37, 5U4, 5R4, or 5Y3 types.

These sound really nice, better than I expected. Tonally, they remind me a lot of the EL37, probably not surprising since they likely use the same materials. A little less airy and a little less body than the EL37, but still very great tone and air, still very smooth. I think these could make for a nice budget alternative to EL37.

A real busman's holiday in progress!

When you say everything else, does that include the 274b with the EL33?

Yup. GZ34 / 5AR4 is the lowest voltage drop to rectifier made, so pretty much anything else will get the EL33 further away from its maximum plate dissipation.

Excellent… those Mullard EL33 look great!
